My lovely mix arrived a couple of weeks back (complete with candy!), but due to leaving it in the car stereo / being inept / business / and general japery, I haven't reviewed it.
Until now.
It's a great wee mix, and I'm hugely impressed by the way it flows from song to song - my own efforts tend to be much jumpier affairs. And now we have the track by track breakdown...
1. A really chilled, country song, with licks from Dolly and Elvis in there, so I'm a happy girl, and close harmonies, so I'm a really happy girl. Great track to kick off with.
2. A reggae take on 'No Surprises'. And while Siobhan, Matthew, Ania et al. may fling things at my head for saying so....I like it. It's really laidback and totally removed from the original. I love how he sings about the "handshake of carbon monoxide"...and then the brass kicks in. Good stuff.
3. I know this one :-). It's "Soho Square" by Kirsty MacColl, one of my favourite singers. A teacher I had at high school once compared my voice to hers (I think he may have been a mental), so I dutifully went and sought out her albums and backcatalogue. Just an immense song. Beautiful!
4. Oooooh, this song is pretty. I love the intro with the guitars and the strumming. And the voice is one I think I recognise...but I can't place. I'll be glad to find out who this is.
5. Another song I already love. It's "Where The Stars Go Blue" by Ryan Adams. This is one of my favourite songs from him, because being a bit of a folky hippy type at times, I am a sucker for a harmony. Great song, and it fits so well with the tracks either side.
6. What a quirky track! I like this, but I have no idea who or what it is :-).
7. "Blackbird". Is this the Beatles version? I haven't heard it in an age. But it's beautiful.
8. Another great song with oodles of guitars. I am a complete softie for a guitar or a piano in a pop song. They have the same effect on me that violins and cellos have in classical. I'll be intruigued (how the heck do you spell that word?) to discover who this is.
9. This is the song you reminded me of! The original 'Time After Time' is one of my favourite love songs (I liked it, then Baz Luhrmann put it in 'Strictly Ballroom', then I looooved it), and I'd heard this version on one of the shows I watch. And this one (the Eva Cassidy version) is just beautiful. So fragile yet powerful.
10. Oh, piano. This follows in the chilled, laidback mould. This whole mix makes me want to pour a glass of wine, turn up the music, and go sit of the porch and watch the sunset. And I don't even have a porch.
11. Gets a bit funkier here, but still simmers away nicely. Nice.
12. Is this Joanna Newsom? I like it a lot!
13. Oh, a slight change of pace, still guitary, but a bit indie pop. Good stuff!
14. "Both Sides Now". Good heavens this is sublime. Great, great track.
15. This song is so beautiful. I love the layers in the intro, with the different instruments, and then the vocal hits. Lovely.
16. I am running out of adjectives. :-) Another chilled, relaxed song - I love the lyrics in this one! I love the ebb and flow and build of it.
17. "Protection" by Massive Attack. What I love is that when you've used a song I already know, you've picked a favourite. It's quite uncanny...
18. Whistling! Instant cheeriness!
19. Yet another great song rounding off a lovely mix. Short and sweet and instrumental.
I really love my mix, sweetheart.
Diolch yn fawr iawn! (I hope that's right. I'm trusting the internet on that one :-))

it's worth admitting that tracks 8 and 11 were done by local welsh bands who i know through friends (myspace them for more stuff)
tracks 1,3,4,5,10,14,15,16 are all songs that i love singing/playing with the boys in the pub on a sunday night- i felt a bit selfish putting them on, but i'm glad you liked them, especially kirsty maccoll who is also in my key (and one of my heroes!)
track 10 - i'd like to be played at my wedding
track 7 i'd like played at my funeral
Must say, awesome tracklisitng.
